Throughout their career, Atlanta progressive-sludge rockers Mastodon have crafted an array of extraordinary tunes, resulting in eight incredible studio albums under their belt at this time.

But alongside these fantastic records, there’s another release from the band that doesn’t get as much attention and certainly deserves the love: their Jonah Hex EP.

Jonah Hex is a DC superhero who was created by writer John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga, and debuted in All-Star Western #10. He’s a bounty hunter with incredible strength who strives to protect those in need, and in 2010, a movie based on him was released.

Reportedly, director Jimmy Hayward had reached out to the band to share how listening to their album Blood Mountain helped him while writing the Jonah Hex script.

Per a past conversation with Paste, Mastodon’s Troy Sanders said that Hayward “called us out of the blue as a fan. It was the most beautiful, authentic way to collaborate.” Hayward asked Mastodon if they would help make the soundtrack, and the band agreed to do it for “basically nothing.”

Mastodon’s work would eventually birth the Jonah Hex: Revenge Gets Ugly EP, a six-track instrumental EP that features the band’s iconic sludgy sound.

While it isn’t Leviathan or Crack the Skye, Mastodon’s Jonah Hex EP is an incredible work. Below the band’s upcoming tour dates with Lamb of God, you can listen to the soundtrack.
