The next Super Bowl will be held on February 11, 2024 at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada.
Asked who he’d like to see perform during this year’s halftime show, state governor Joe Lombardo had the kind of quick and definitive answer that you can bang your head to.
“AC/DC!” Lombardo said, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “I was going to yell it out … But yeah, I’m serious. Bring ’em back.” The governor made his comments at the NFL and Las Vegas Super Bowl LVIII Host Committee press conference this past Wednesday at Vū Las Vegas production complex.
According to the website Sportscasting.com, factors such as popularity, music genre, and the artists’ overall performance value are taken into consideration when choosing the performers for the halftime show.
Bear in mind that it’s not the NFL who chooses which artist takes the stage. Although the league comes up with a short list, the final selection lands on the shoulders of the Super Bowl host city.
Twisted Sister frontman and heavy metal elder statesman Dee Snider slammed the NFL back in September of 2019 for hiring Jennifer Lopez and Shakira to perform at the upcoming Super Bowl. Once word about the NFL’s choice of entertainment for that year’s event started to circulate, the famously outspoken Snider inevitably took to Twitter to voice his general dismay, writing: “WTF!? @shakira and @jlo for this year’s @nfl halftime show!? Once again the great heavy music that rocks the stadiums week after week, game after game is completely ignored. I guess we don’t shake our ass enough!!”
Snider went on to explain: “My point about this years @NFL halftime show isn’t a slight on @shakira or @JLo, it’s frustration that week after week rock is the go to music during games but gets no respect when it comes to the Super Bowl! And I don’t think I’m popular enough for that slot. But @Metallica…”
It wasn’t the first time the singer took a swing at the NFL for not booking rock acts at the Super Bowl halftime show. A few months earlier in February of 2019, Snider pointed out that the playlists during NFL games had been dominated by a number of hard rock and heavy metal acts for decades, yet no metal band has ever performed at the halftime show to date. He listed songs by Metallica, AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Guns N’ Roses, Quiet Riot, Queen, Europe and his own Twisted Sister as a few staples that are often pumped into the PA during NFL games.
“Hey @NFL! Your go-to songs at EVERY game are metal: Enter Sandman, Cum On Feel the Noise, Thunder, Crazy Train, We’re Not Gonna Take It, We Are the Champions, Final Countdown, I Wanna Rock, We Will Rock You, Welcome to Jungle. NONE of those bands have EVER played half-time show!” he wrote.
Let’s all cross our fingers that Dee Snider gets his wish (and ours) this year!
