In an Instagram post where he pays tribute to Paul Reubens, Rob Zombie reflects on working with and meeting the Pee-wee Herman actor.
In his post, Zombie talks about meeting the Pee-wee Herman actor back in 1986; at that time, Pee-wee’s Playhouse was being filmed at Broadcast Arts in New York, which is where Zombie also happened to work. While the show was being filmed there, the shock-rocker worked on Pee-wee’s Playhouse as a PA.
Zombie goes on to talk about what it was like seeing Reubens in the office and recalls the one conversation he ever had with him.
Rob Zombie’s reflects on meeting actor Paul Reubens:
“So sad to hear about death of Paul Rubens. He was amazing. Back in 1986 I was lucky enough to be working at a place called Broadcast Arts in NYC when they announced they were doing his new show Pee Wee’s Playhouse. It was a very unconventional set up with the playhouse built in a loft space on Broadway, not a sound stage. I can still remember his first day in the office. Everyone was waiting for Pee Wee to step off the elevator when the doors opened out stepped Paul looking exactly like his mugshot. He took one look at the live band playing Tequila, rolled his eyes and walked straight into a meeting. Everyone was bummed. I thought it was hilarious.
“Only talked to him once. He asked me where the restroom was and I said ‘ right over there’. After the first season they moved the whole show to California and the rest is history. #rippeeweeherman”
It’s so cool that Zombie had the opportunity to meet Reubens and see him work his comedy magic in person. Through all of his art, Paul Reubens brought so much joy and laughter into people’s lives, and he will deeply be missed.
Speaking of Reubens – in our own tribute to the actor – we wrote about a scene in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure that involves a cameo from Twisted Sister.
