At some point in between Metallica‘s recent performances at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium, singer and guitarist James Hetfield decided to get a new neck tattoo.

The thrash metal icons played at the stadium this past Friday (August 25th) and Sunday (August 27th). Over on Instagram and Reddit, a couple of fans have pointed out that, during the band’s Friday show, Hetfield did not have this new ink; it was during the band’s Sunday show that the fans noticed the frontman’s new tattoo. Per Instagram user camilarsz, they say that Hetfield “may have gotten [the tattoo] done either saturday or sunday cuz I don’t recall seeing it on friday.”

Hetfield’s new tattoo is located on the right side of his neck and features the following words: “Thy Will Not Mine Be Done.”

Upon doing a Google search of this saying, “Thy Will Not Mine Be Done” seems to be a faith-based reference. It’s also a saying associated with the book Daily Affirmations, which was published by Alcoholics Anonymous. Hetfield has struggled with addiction in the past but has sought treatment, having entered rehab back in 2001 and again in 2019.

Below you can find a photo that features an up-close look at James Hetfield’s new tattoo.

The other day, SoFi Stadium confirmed that Metallica “now holds the highest single-show attendance record” at the venue. To find out how many tickets the band sold each night, follow this link here.
