We’ve learned to expect the unexpected when it comes to the work that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross take on over the years.

While the duo will always be best known as the combustion engine behind industrial rock titans Nine Inch Nails, their career in cinema is just as impressive. With a laundry list of accolades that include a pair of Academy Awards for their original scores on The Social Network and Soul, Reznor and Ross have become two of the most highly regarded composers in Hollywood.

In what may very well be their most daring cinematic collaboration yet, Reznor and Ross took on scoring duties for the latest film adaptation from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Co-directed by Jeff Rowe and Kyler Spears, the animated feature will open in theaters on August 02nd and features an all-star cast of voice actors including Seth Rogen (Bebop), Micah Abbey (Donatello), Shamon Brown Jr. (Michelangelo), Nicolas Cantu (Leonardo), and Brady Noon (Raphael), Ayo Edebiri (April O’Neil), Giancarlo Esposito (Baxter Stockman), Post Malone (Ray Fillet), Paul Rudd (Mondo Gecko), Hannibal Buress (Genghis Frog), Rose Byrne (Leatherhead), Ice Cube (Superfly), Maya Rudolph (Cynthia Utrom), and John Cena (Rocksteady).

It might be hard to imagine serious-minded composers like Reznor and Ross embracing the juvenile humor of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but with song titles like “Dipshits on a Roof,” “Murder the Shreks!,” “Puke Girl,” “Megamind, Gru-Type SH*T,” and “Better Than Mark Ruffalo,” it’s clear that having fun is an important part of the musical journey.

Their score for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem follows recent soundtracks for films like Bones and All, Soul, and Mank. Their next project is with famed director and longtime collaborator David Fincher for his upcoming film, The Killer.
