Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, the legendary wrestler known as The Iron Sheik, has passed away. He was 81 years old at the time of his death.

The iconic wrestler passed away today (June 7th), and a statement pertaining to his passing has been uploaded to his social media.

Per that statement (as transcribed by the New York Post):

“Today, we gather with heavy hearts to bid farewell to a true legend, a force of nature, and an iconic figure who left an incredible mark on the world of professional wrestling. It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of The Iron Sheik, but we also take solace in knowing that he departed this world peacefully, leaving behind a legacy that will endure for generations to come.”

The statement goes on to add: “Throughout his career, The Iron Sheik became a cultural phenomenon, transcending the real of professional wrestling to become a pop culture icon. His memorable catchphrases and unforgettable moments are etched into the memories of fans worldwide. He left an indelible mark on the industry, and his influence can still be felt in the world of wrestling today.”

The Iron Sheik made his wrestling debut in 1973 and retired in 2010; among his many accomplishments, he won the WWF World Heavyweight Championship in 1983. In 2005, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

He was an incredible presence in and outside the ring, and given his amazing work, he has cemented himself as one of the most iconic and legendary heels in wrestling history.
