Crazy antics might be par for the course at an Iron Maiden show, but that doesn’t mean that everyone in the band wants to be joking around. At a recent performance in the Czech Republic, bassist Steve Harris got visibly irritated with Bruce Dickinson when the frontman tried to include him in hamming it up.
It all happened during Iron Maiden’s concert at the O2 Arena in Prague on May 31st. During a rendition of the band’s rarely performed epic “Alexander The Great”, Dickinson somehow came into possession of a prop Roman guard helmet. The frontman wore it himself for a few seconds before his mischievous side took over. When he attempted to put the helmet on Harris’ head, the bassist swiftly tossed aside the adornment with his picking hand. Clearly annoyed, he went over to the drum riser with his back to the crowd while Dickinson mocked his bandmate’s curmudgeonly response to the audience.
The eight-and-a-half minute classic “Alexander The Great” was performed live for the first time ever by Iron Maiden on May 28th, the opening date of “The Future Past Tour” in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The tour focuses not only on the band’s most recent Senjutsu studio album but also their legendary 1986 LP, Somewhere In Time.
When asked a number of years in a radio interview exactly why Iron Maiden had never played “Alexander The Great” live, Bruce Dickinson quipped: “Because Adrian [Smith] can’t remember the guitar solo.”
