Nicolas Cage isn’t just one of the best actors working in Hollywood today, he also happens to be one hell of a metalhead. Not only is he a fan of black metal, Megadeth, and Guns N’ Roses, but he used to host horror movie nights for his famous heavy metal and grunge friends.

Recently, Cage’s new movie Renfield hit theatres; Renfield is a horror-comedy where the actor plays Dracula. During a past conversation with Metal Hammer where he was promoting his vampire flick, Cage talked about the various musicians he would invite over for horror movie nights.

Among the guests that would come over to watch scary movies with him, there was Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett, Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder, Tom Waits, Rob Zombie, and the late Jonny Ramone.

Speaking about his past relationship with Ramone, Cage said:

“We were very close because we had interests in horror films. Johnny was a huge horror fan and would come over to my house and look at the great old horror comic books and posters I had. I would go over to his house and he would play me a very extensive video collection of horror that he had collected over the years. Rob [Zombie] was a friend of Johnny’s and he brought Rob into my life, so he and I became friends. So we had this connection with horror and music.”

Talking about his circle of horror movie-loving celebrity friends, Cage went on to share what his special get-togethers were like:

“My friends were Tom Waits and Kirk Hammett from Metallica. So I brought them to the table and Johnny brought in Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam. We all became friends together, this circle of horror movie fans and music fans. That was a great time. It was a lot like the old French salons, where we were talking art, film and music. Eddie and Johnny would do this funny thing called ‘The Mentalist’, where Eddie would start reading people’s minds – I don’t know how they did that but that was one of their jokes. Tom went on and did a cover of a Ramones song. It was a very creative, give-and-take experience that I was proud to be a member of.”

Holy shit, can you imagine a horror movie night with Nicolas Cage, Kirk Hammett, Rob Zombie, Tom Waits, Eddie Vedder, and Jonny Ramone? That sounds like an absolutely wild and amazing time.
