Earlier this year, news came out that artist Brent Elliott White was suing Megadeth due to not being paid for work he had done for the band.
Per White’s initial complaint, he said he was contracted to create the album cover art for the band’s latest studio album, The Sick, The Dying… And the Dead!. He said that no written contract was ever signed, and during the concept phase, he claimed that he worked for hundreds of hours.
After working on the album cover art, White said the band’s manager reached out to him and asked him for some additional work; it was upon this new request that White expressed that he had not been paid yet for the work he already did.
White claimed he later saw his artwork appear as part of a promotion for the new Megadeth album (via a Rolling Stone article) and saw that he was not accredited. He then decided to sue Megadeth, Universal Music Group, and others for copyright infringement. Among his claims, White said he “created artwork and characters over time for Megadeth that have become an integral part of the band’s identity.”
All that said, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, this lawsuit has now been settled.
This past Thursday, the parties filed a joint notice of settlement and shared with the court that “the parties have reached an agreement in principle for the resolution of this action.”
White’s attorneys shared that “the matter has been resolved amicably.”
Based on the information provided, it appears that things were handled relatively well, so here’s hoping everyone is happy now.
