Given that he is one of the greatest heavy metal drummers of all time, Dave Lombardo knows a thing or two when it comes to spotting talent. And while the former Slayer drummer is a fan of drummers who work in various genres, he recently shouted out a black metal drummer who really amazes him.

Lombardo recently took part in an interview with ALLMUSIC (published on Eddie Trunk’s website) and was asked a variety of drum-related questions. Among the questions asked of him, Lombardo was asked what he thinks of modern-day rock and metal drummers.

Lombardo replied with the following, and among his comments, he gave a shoutout to a drummer from an avant-garde black metal band who really blows him away:

“By and large it’s fascinating how it’s evolved. I enjoy a lot of it. They’re talented and younger and younger as we age. Their chops are on point.

“There’s a lot of great drummers – one of which is Daru Jones, who plays with Jack White. Very unique. Ian Chang who performs with Son Lux – he’s also an amazing drummer. New, upcoming avantgarde drummers that work with a lot of my friends in New York City – Kenny Grohowski, who plays in a band called Imperial Triumphant. He’s amazing. Also, Ches Smith from Trevor Dunn’s Trio-Convulsant.

“There’s countless – it’s just a matter of discovering and sifting the mass amounts of drummers that are out there and promoting their work online.”

Having formed in 2005, Imperial Triumphant is one of the most technically captivating bands in heavy music today. Their approach to jazzy, technical black metal is nothing short of astounding.

The band’s most recent studio album release is 2022’s Spirit of Ecstasy, which is a truly remarkable record.

What do you think of Dave Lombardo shouting out Kenny Grohowski of Imperial Triumphant? Who are some of your favorite drummers (either in metal or outside of metal)?
