Bands are just like families.

The bond we feel towards the people who play our favorite songs is that much stronger, more beautiful, tumultuous and painful for the units who create those brilliantly enduring works together. For all of us, there is pretty much nothing more powerful than a family reunion.

Last week, a rabid crowd at the Tokyo concert of thrash legends Megadeth was treated to a joyful surprise when Marty Friedman, the incredibly renowned guitarist who played on classic albums such as Rust In Peace and Countdown To Extinction, joined his brothers on stage for the first time in over two decades

Now, to the excitement of longtime fans everywhere, footage has come out of Friedman, Dave Mustaine, and the rest of the current Megadeth lineup hanging out before the show.

While Marty’s appearance on stage is surely the highlight of the evening, watching him and Dave interact for the first time in twenty years is a sight to behold in and of itself.

As the video begins, Friedman lets us know how excited he is to be back on stage with his old band after all this time. We then follow him as he meets up with former bandmate Dave Mustaine and the rest of Megadeth before they get ready for rehearsals.

We get to see some of the actual performance, but just as amazing is a side-stage shot of Marty Friedman being greeted by thunderous applause from the adoring crowd.

Afterward, we’re treated to six minutes of Marty, Dave, and Megadeth hanging out backstage after the gig and talking about the whole event.

Only time will tell if this reunion is an experience that will happen again. After all, a lot can happen in twenty years. For old school fans of Megadeth, it’s well worth the wait.
