The Insanely Rare Racing Game Developed By a Metal Label

It’s hard to overstate the impact the vehicular combat series Twisted Metal had on video games.

Everyone was trying to get in on car combat, be it a long-running franchise like Jak and Daxter in racing game Jak X, or the bizarre WWE Crush Hour, where wrestlers took their combat to cars.

To get in on the fun, legendary heavy metal label Earache Records helped produce the PS2 title Earache Extreme Metal Racing.

The game was developed by studio Data Design Interactive, and took the combat and attitude of Twisted Metal and morphed it into a kind of over-the-top kart racing game.

Earache Extreme Metal Racing lets players choose a race team representing a band that was signed to Earache at the time of the game’s development. Bands represented are Biomechanical, Akercocke, Decapitated, The Berzerker, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Linea 77, Mortiis, Society1 and Municipal Waste.

Alas, the band members themselves aren’t represented in the game, and you’re relegated to generic “metal” NPCs who wave the flag of the band you’ve chosen to rep. Still neat, but alas.

The race tracks themselves are about what you’d expect. You’ve got your hell track, a graveyard, a satanic wasteland and some others. Essentially, everything looks like it’s straight out of a metal cover.

The game itself, admittedly, is rough. The team behind it, Data Design Interactive, typically produced low-budget Wii titles. Stuff like Classic British Motor Racing, Billy the Wizard: Rocket Broomstick Racing and others.

Still, the soundtrack is pretty ace. Sadly, the game was only released in Europe, but collectors can grab a copy on eBay if they so wish.

Check out the soundtrack below, and see footage of the game too.
