It is not uncommon for artists to show interest in jumping genres; take rapper Doja Cat for example, for as of recently, she shared that she wants to make hardcore punk music.
Artists who are primarily based in one genre and attempting to shift gears into another genre can sometimes be read as a desperate move to capture extra attention (*cough* Machine Gun Kelly *cough*).
But in Doja Cat’s case, her desire to try something new comes from a genuine passion for heavy music.
Per a recent feature with Variety, it is noted how much of a fan Doja Cat is of the punk act Idles, who is noted as her favorite band of the past year.
During this conversation, Doja Cat reveals that she would like to explore punk music; however, she makes it clear that she has no interest in going down the route of pop-punk.
She feels that there are enough pop-punk artists and that she does not need to be contributing to the genre. Below is exactly what she had to say about her interest in creating punk music:
“This is the manic part. I wasn’t gonna tell you. But I’ll just tell you now, because not talking about it is making me annoyed: I want to explore punk. But not pop-punk.”
She goes on to add, “I feel like we have enough pop-punk artists right now. And if there needs to be more, then let there be more, but I don’t think I’m the one to do it.
“I want to explore more of a raw, unfiltered, hardcore punk sort of thing. It’s just something that I’m doing for my own personal fun — getting some drummers and guitarists together. And I don’t even know if that’s gonna make it out there.”
