
People are pretty upset about Sam Smith and Kim Petras performing “Unholy” at the Grammys.
Both musicians went full-bore in going all the way with a playfully devilish performance of “Unholy,” the two of them clad in all-red garb. Of course, the point of this was to illicit reactions from those who would be easily offended at any kind of Satanic imagery.
That happened, the likes of Ted Cruz and others tweeted out their disgust at the performance. Outrage machine aside, one might wonder: how Satanic was the performance actually?
According to the actual Church of Satan, not really. Speaking to TMZ, David Harris, magister for the Church of Satan said Smith and Petras’ performance was “alright” and “nothing particularly special.”
Ouch. TMZ later mentions Harris going after Cruz and others saying, “It’s sad when politicians on a national stage use someone’s religion as a punchline.”
Additionally, TMZ says Harris and company were far more complimentary of Lil Nas X’s video for “Montero,” that it was “much more proactive than anything Sam or Kim did, at least in a satanic sense.”
