When getting into an artist, it’s hard to find a good place to start.

Even though Avenged Sevenfold are titans of metal, M Shadows has tips for music fans with a blind spot.

When talking to Revolver, Shadows mentioned that the best song to get people into the band is from their 2013 album Hail to the King saying,

Usually, to get people in the door that are not deep in the scene, I just show them ‘Hail to the King.’ It’s like, they get it. The next time I see them, usually it’s in their playlist.

“It’s just one of those things that’s easy. If I’m going to show my band to a guy on the golf course or, like, the guy at Ralphs, I just throw him that song and it usually does the trick.”

While the band’s 2013 album delved into hard rock rather than traditional metal, Shadows recently stood by the album saying,

Hail to the King’ (the song) streams more than double any other tracks we have weekly. The album is on track to out-sell all the others… yet a portion of the fan base acts like it was a failure by all accounts.”

However, Shadows does admit to the band wearing their Metallica influences on their sleeve a little too much on King saying,

“In hindsight we cut it a little too close. But all you can do is learn and move on.”

When talking about the most impressive A7X song, Shadows points to the band’s most recent album The Stage saying,

If I want to show somebody a song that I’m really proud of, I would start with ‘The Stage.’ And then, I might show them, like, ‘Buried Alive’ or ‘Exist’.”

While metal fan can get recommendations from their friends, it doesn’t get easier than the singer recommending it for you.
