There aren’t too many bands these days that haven’t been influenced by Nirvana.

As much as Kurt Cobain may have had a huge impact on rock music, his daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, isn’t necessarily the biggest fan of her dad’s music.

When growing up, Frances had mentioned being more of a Goth kid and not getting attached to Nirvana’s music saying in an interview with Rolling Stone,

I don’t really like Nirvana that much. Sorry, promotional people, Universal. I’m more into Mercury Rev, Oasis, Brian Jonestown Massacre. The grunge scene is not what I’m interested in.”

Since the grunge scene came and went before Frances could grow up, she talked about being at arm’s length with her father’s legacy. She did admit that there were a few Nirvana tracks that she liked, picking songs from both sides of the spectrum.

‘Territorial Pissings’ is a fucking great song. And ‘Dumb’ – I cry every time I hear that song. It’s a stripped-down version of Kurt’s perception of himself – of himself on drugs, off drugs, feeling inadequate to be titled the voice of a generation.”

When talking about the legacy of her father though, Frances talked about how she’s actually glad that she wasn’t that into her dad’s music saying,

I would have felt more awkward if I’d been a fan. I was around 15 when I realized he was inescapable. Even if I was in a car and had the radio on, there’s my dad. He’s larger than life and our culture is obsessed with dead musicians.”

It’s also become a little bit awkward for Frances to see her dad get even bigger since his death, pointing out that her dad seems more popular now than ever saying,

“He inspired people to put him on a pedestal, to become St. Kurt. He became even bigger after he died than he was when he was alive. You don’t think it could have gotten any bigger. But it did.”

Even though the rest of the world sees Kurt as one of the greatest musicians of all time, Frances prefers to see her dad more for who he is. He may seem like a god of rock music, but he was still human.
