Via a recent interview with Metal Hammer, Venom frontman Cronos is asked what he thinks about Metallica and Slayer.
Specifically, the interviewer brings up how Venom had a big impact on thrash metal, and if Cronos viewed these bands as kindred spirits or threats.
While the frontman makes some general comments about the two bands, he primarily speaks about how he feels about Metallica and shares how he is surprised by their success. While he says that he is a big fan of some Metallica albums, he also feels that the thrash titans have created some “shit albums.”
When talking about his feelings about Metallica and Slayer, this is what Cronos had to say:
“I hoped they’d be big, because they were good bands, friends at the time, and it was fun on the road. I hoped this scene would get bigger. I wanted everybody to love this music, and the heavier the better.
But I never would have thought that Metallica would have had the success that they’ve had. They’ve had some shit albums – they’d have to admit that. But the first three albums, fucking great.”
If you had to guess, which Metallica albums do you think the Venom frontman is referring to when he says “shit albums”? Speaking of the band’s records, we recently ranked Metallica albums! We took all their studio albums, and that of Lulu, and ranked them from worst to best. Which Metallica album do you think we ranked at number one?
You can check out the full ranking by following the link below, but here is what we had to say about Ride the Lightning:
“The follow-up Metallica album to that of Kill ‘Em All, Ride the Lightning makes for a great boost in quality (in terms of both songwriting and performances). With a plethora of exhilarating thrash cuts, the band really shows off their heavy metal aggression, and it is here where they really began to cement themselves as a band to keep an eye out for.”
