2022 has been a year of great loss; there have been a lot of heartbreaking passings this year in the metal and rock communities, with fans and loved ones mourning such painful losses.

We wanted to take the time to think about those who passed away in 2022 and to reflect on their legacy.

D.H. Peligro

Born on July 9th, 1959, D.H. Peligro became most famously known as the drummer for the Dead Kennedys. He initially joined the Dead Kennedys in 1981 and played with them until 1986; that said, he returned to the band in 2001 and played with them until 2008. However, upon returning to the band in 2009, he stayed active with the Dead Kennedys for 13 years. He passed away on October 28th at the age of 63.

Taylor Hawkins

Born on February 17th, 1972, Taylor Hawkins became most famously known as the drummer for the Foo Fighters. Hawkins joined the Foo Fighters in time to be part of their third studio album, 1999’s There Is Nothing Left to Lose. As the Foo Fighters drummer, Hawkins provided his talent and skills to the band’s seven following studio albums. Taylor Hawkins passed away on March 25th at the age of 50.

Trevor Strnad

Born on May 3rd, 1981, Trevor Strnad became most famously known as the singer for The Black Dahlia Murder. Trevor cared deeply for the metal community and would always do what he could to help out smaller bands. Trevor helped to form The Black Dahlia Murder in 2001 and created nine studio albums with the band. He passed away on May 11th at 41 years old.

Stuart Anstis

Born on May 2nd, 1974, Stuart Anstis played guitar for Cradle of Filth between 1995 and 1999, helping to create multiple releases with the band. Stuart passed away on August 21st at the age of 48.

Gabe Serbian

Born on May 1st, 1977, Gabe Serbian was a super-talented artist who worked with a variety of amazing bands. Along with his own band The Locust, Gabe also worked with Dead Cross, Cattle Decapitation, and Zu (just to name a few). He passed away on April 30th at the age of 44.

Tim Feerick

Tim Feerick played in Dance Gavin Dance from 2009 to 2010, but then returned in 2012. He took part in creating the following albums with the band: Acceptance Speech (2013), Instant Gratification (2015), Mothership (2016), and the band’s latest studio album, 2020’s Afterburner. Tim passed away on April 13th at the age of 34.

Mark Lanegan

Born on November 25th, 1964, Mark Lanegan is a grunge icon. He began his musical career in 1984 as the frontman for the rock band Screaming Trees; he was also a former member of Queens of the Stone Age and The Gutter Twins. Mark passed away on February 22nd at the age of 57.

Fredrik Johansson

Born on June 25th, 1974, Fredrik Johansson became most famously known for his work in the melodic death metal band Dark Tranquillity. During his time in the band he helped to create the following studio albums: The Gallery, The Mind’s I, and Projector. Fredrik passed away on January 25th at the age of 47.

Meat Loaf

Born on September 27th, 1947, Meat Loaf is a rock and roll icon. Along with becoming a Grammy-award-winning artist, he would also go on to have a successful acting career. He passed away on January 20th at the age of 74.

Howie Pyro

Born on June 28th, 1960, Howie became most famously known for his time playing bass in Danzig‘s band. Howie was a member of Danzig’s band from 2000 – 2003; he also played in Blessed, Freaks, and D Generation. Howie passed away on May 4th at the age of 61.

Ric Parnell

Born on August 13th, 1951, Ric Parnell became most famously known for his role in the movie Spinal Tap, where he played the titular band’s drummer. He also made name for himself via the band Atomic Rooster. Ric passed away on May 1st at the age of 70.

Ronnie Deo

Born on November 22, 1974, Ronnie became most famously known for his time playing bass in Incantation. He was part of the band from 1990 to 1992. Ronnie passed away on April 12th at the age of 47.

Bob Heathcote

Born on May 27th, 1964, Bob became most famously known for his time playing in Suicidal Tendencies as their bassist. He was in Suicidal Tendencies from 1988-1989. Bob passed away on  July 24th at the age of 58.

David Andersson

Born on February 25th, 1975, David Andersson became most famously known as the guitarist for Soilwork. Andersson joined the band in 2012 and has played on numerous albums since. Outside of Soilwork, Andersson pursued other musical endeavors in the hard-rock band The Night Flight Orchestra. He passed away on September 14th at the age of 47.

Bruce Greig

Born on October 7th, 1967, Bruce became most famously known for his work in Dying Fetus and Misery Index. During his time in Misery Index, Bruce helped to create the band’s Dissent EP. He passed away on February 6th at the age of 54.

Jonny Z

Born on March 16th, 1952, Jonathan Zazula was the owner of the Rock ‘n Roll Heaven record store, and alongside his wife ran Megaforce Records. Throughout his career, Jonny worked with a great array of bands, including Anthrax, Testament, Overkill, Metallica, and many more. He passed away on February 1st at the age of 69.
