It looks like one of the weirdest music collaborations in recent memory might be almost ready for our ears.
Back in the summer of 2021, pop star Ed Sheeran turned some heads by telling the Sun that he was a little red-headed hessian: “I was really into death metal as a kid. I listened to Cradle of Filth and Slipknot and all that stuff.
I’m not saying I could ever step into that world. I learnt all those riffs on guitar as a kid. That’s something I’ve never thought about doing — but something I would not be opposed to creating.”
The comment of course made its way to Dani Filth, who skeptically at the time responded that “I’ll believe it when I see it. Fellow Suffolk lad could come good in the end. ‘Dracula’s Castle On The Hill’ anyone?”
Fast forward a few months, and Dani Filth broke the incredulous news to Kerrang! that he and Sheeran now actually had plans to make music together:
“I’ve actually been e-mailing with [Ed Sheeran]… He actually touched base with me. I’ve been invited up to his place. Well, he said he could come down to mine, but I pointed out to him that I don’t own my own bar or village, and it’d be better if I went there.
“He said he’d do anything, quite literally. He said he’s a massive fan. He seems like a genuinely very nice guy actually.”
More time passed, and then Knotfest sat down with Filth for an update a few months ago, during which Dani confirmed that an Ed Sheeran song had already started:
“We still have yet to finish our song with Ed Sheeran. He’s done some of it, but then he had a baby, and then he got obviously sidetracked with that and doing whatever Ed does, which is play massive shows around the globe.
He’s not at our beck and call. But he is gonna finish it, he assures me. Actually, I spoke to him quite recently. [It will be released] when it’s finished. We don’t know when it’s coming out.”
And now, it seems very likely that the track (or perhaps more) is now complete, as Dani Filth posted a photo of himself with Sheeran along with Cradle of Filth producer Scott Atkins, with the caption: “A little over a week ago I was having lunch with the unlikely lads, having just done something fun.”
Something fun, ay? We can’t lie- we’re pretty damn curious to hear this one. Here’s hoping it’s a full-on ripper with Sheeran shrieks over blast beats.
