As reported by NewScientist, scientists have confirmed that bats and death metal singers growl in a similar manner. Over the course of decades, scientists have been studying and trying to better understand the throat structures that bats use when it comes to their calls.

Over at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, after tests and lots of studying, scientists found that the high-frequency echolocation calls of bats are “produced by thin, translucent vocal membranes that rest atop the vocal cords,” and that lower-frequency squeaks come from bat’s “false vocal folds.” Per Coen Elemans of the University of Southern Denmark, the term “false vocal folds” comes from the fact that “in humans they are rarely used, never for speech.”

However, and this is where things get extra interesting for us metalheads – false vocal folds are believed to be used in extreme vocal performances (like death metal singers do). Elemans goes on to share that the social squeaks of bats are equivalent to human death metal growls. So whether we are talking tiny bat squeaks or crushing death metal growls, a similar throat structure is being used between the two species. How fucking rad and surreal is that?!

In other news related to animals and metal, some months ago, Lorna Shore vocalist Will Ramos took part in a game where he had to guess whether screams/growls were coming from animals or humans. Speaking of Will, the Lorna Shore singer also recently shared a story where he was practicing his vocals out in the woods, and someone mistook him for bigfoot! The details behind this story are hilarious as hell.
