While we as fans love and adore much of what our favorite bands create, we are always curious to hear and learn what they think of their own material. When it comes to Metallica‘s music, while of course there are songs he is very proud of, there is one particular track the band has created that Lars Ulrich is not a fan of.

Per a past interview with Vulture, Ulrich ended up mentioning his least favorite Metallica song. Now this interview was taken in 2020, which means Ulrich had to consider the band’s ENTIRE catalog of songs. At the time of this interview (and still to this day), the band had 10 studio albums out.

That said, Lars was able to think of the Metallica song that gets under his skin – one he feels “sounds really forced.” Want to take a guess at what song it is? … Okay, ready for the reveal? Lars Ulrich’s least favorite Metallica song is none other than… “Eye of the Beholder” (which is from the band’s album …And Justice For All). Speaking to this song, Lars shares the following:

“Wherever I hear that song, it sounds kind of like — I guess we don’t want to be super-disrespectful to it — but it sounds really forced. It sounds like you put a square peg in a round hole. It sounds like it’s got two different tempos. There’s kind of a 4/4 feel in the intro and on the verses, and then I think the choruses are more like in a waltz tempo. It literally sounds like two different worlds rubbing up against each other. It sounds very awkward to me. I’m not a huge fan of that song.”

Lars does go on to add, “I guess the asterisk is that, to me, we did the best we could each moment.” What do you make of “Eye of the Beholder” being Lar’s least favorite song? Is this a Metallica song that you enjoy?
