In the mid to late 1980s, Florida became a hot spot for death metal. During that time, you have the likes of Obituary, Death, Monstrosity, Morbid Angel, and more releasing records – with albums coming out of the Sunshine State (how ironic).

From 1986 to 1996 – and then later from 2004 to 2015 – David Vincent was a member of Morbid Angel. Per a recent interview with KazaGastão, the ex-Morbid Angel bassist and vocalist reflects on the death metal scene that took place in Florida.

When it comes to why so many popular death metal classics were shaped in Florida, David primarily points to a particular recording studio. Here is what David Vincent has to say regarding the Sunshine State’s relationship to death metal (as transcribed by Metal Injection):

“Well, I don’t think so. What happened was [legendary recording studio] Morrisound Studios was there. It’s almost like people think that there’s something in the water; there’s not. People romanticize all kinds of stuff, they say, ‘Oh, man, maybe I can go to a bar and I can see Morbid Angel and Obituary and Atheist and all these people at the same place.’

“We were all friends, but it’s not like you go to one place and it’s like a clearing house for extreme music. Morrisound Studios recorded a number of these records, Morbid Angel among them, and it just kind of got known as a hub for this kind of stuff. I don’t think it has anything to do with the city; I think it just has to do with — happenstance.”

Of all the classic death metal records to come out of Florida in the ’80s, which ones are your favorite? You can check out the full interview with David Vincent below. When it comes to other recent death metal news, 200 Stab Wounds (easily one of the most badass bands in the modern death metal scene), have recently signed on with Metal Blade Records!
