To some, the idea of being a metalhead and listening to pop music is sacrilege; but for others, music is music and they want to enjoy a variety of genres. One of those metalheads happens to be Slipknot‘s Shawn “Clown” Crahan, who recently shared with The Independent that he loves listening to pop music.
Clown shared two acts he is currently listening to and fond of – one being a more modern act, and one who was super popular back in the aughts. Speaking to his love for pop music and who he is listening to, Shawn shares the following:
“My hardcore fans are gonna hate me for what I say… Well, not hate me, but they’re gonna be upset. I’m listening to a lot of Ariana Grande, some Christina Aguilera. I have a real love of pop.”
Speaking to his hopes and goals when it comes to Slipknot, Crahan doesn’t want the band to become big in the sense of a pop artist, but, he does want Slipknot to continue to grow.
“I don’t necessarily want to be a big pop artist, but Slipknot at this point is pop culture, so for me I want to stand right next to those people because they need to know what is happening on this side of art.”
But as Slipknot rises, Clown never wants to lose track of the fans that have been with the band for so long. He speaks to how important Slipknot’s fanbase is to him, as well as speaks to what his current mask represents symbolically (in the context of his fans).
“I want to shine like a star, and I want everybody to shine like a star […] The shattered mirror is kind of funky but so are you; everybody is. It’s all these tiny little mirrors and, when you’re looking at me, you’ll see yourself. You know you’re there with me. When I’m being a shooting star, you’re shooting with me.”
What do you make of Clown being a big fan of pop? Are you a metalhead who enjoys pop music? Who are some of your favorite acts?
