Yes, we’re aware that this is the second Nickelback-related post from us in 48 hours. No, you don’t have to worry that The Pit is turning into a Nickelback fan account. The honest truth is we were a bit caught off guard by how uncharacteristically heavy the recently released new song teaser is- double bass and panic chords are not something our brain’s associate with the dudes who wrote, well, this.
And sure, we are well aware of the Kroeger brothers’ long-standing friendship with the Abbott brothers (R.I.P.), and that Nickelback got their start on the iconic Roadrunner Records. But yet, it never really occurred to our beer-soaked brain cells that Nickelback may actually themselves be fans of the thing that we all cherish so dearly- heavy metal.
So, down the YouTube rabbit hole we went. And it wasn’t all too long before we got served a live video of the ‘Back covering Metallica’s ‘Sad But True’ at the German Rock am Ring festival way back in what we believe was the summer of 2004. Yes, it’s easy to poke fun at Nickelback. Yes, we could be a bunch of dicks and front like it sucks. But here’s the thing- the cover honestly kind of slaps.
It’s tight, it’s heavy, Chad does a pretty mean Hetfield impression, and we walked away pleasantly surprised. And now, in the likely event that you haven’t seen this video, we are sharing it with you. Since the cover isn’t the full track, clocking in at a little over two minutes, we certainly wouldn’t scoff at more Black Album cover attempts from these guys after this. And we’ll be checking out the full new song when it drops soon with some more open-minded ears than we likely would’ve given previously.
