This past May, Trevor Strnad of The Black Dahlia Murder passed away. Trevor’s death has had a devastating impact on the metal community; let alone that Trevor was a remarkable artistic talent, he was also a profoundly wonderful human being. Besides helping to craft some of the most incredible music in the world of metal, Trevor did so much to raise up the voices of smaller metal bands and showed tremendous appreciation for the band’s fans.
Trevor lived and breathed metal – this artform was his life. After news of Trevor’s passing came out, fellow musicians and fans took to social media, expressing their pain, condolences, and love for the late Black Dahlia Murder frontman. Strnad’s fellow Black Dahlia members also expressed the hurt they were feeling in the wake of his passing; but now, four months later, the band have taken part in their first major interview since Trevor’s death.
This interview is with Decibel Magazine, written by Justin Norton. In this interview, along with the band talking about the devastation and heartache they have been feeling, they also confirmed that they would be continuing forward as a band. In moving forward, the band announced who their new vocalist would be – Black Dahlia c0-founder and guitarist Brian Eschbach will be taking on the role of band frontman and vocalist. To step in as guitarist for Eschbach, Ryan Knight has returned to TBDM.
Among the many quotes shared by the band, Eschbach shared the following about becoming the band’s frontman and their plan to move forward:
“We spent many days thinking things like, ‘Is this over?’. None of us wanted it to be over. We still feel like there is a lot left to do. I know Trevor would keep this band going if I went down a deep, dark path and weren’t here. It’s bigger than us. When we finally started talking about it, we thought, ‘Let’s remake it from within and see if Ryan wants to return. And I’ll take a crack on the vocals and see how it goes.’ I can’t go out there and do Trevor’s voice or try to be him. I can only execute the music of the Black Dahlia Murder with respect and try to do it the most justice I can. I’ve heard Trevor perform more than anyone else alive.”
We encourage folks to read the full Decibel interview involving the members of TBDM. The band have also announced an upcoming show taking place October 28th in Detroit, MI. We love and miss you everyday Trevor <3 We hope that you are at peace, and we want to thank you for all the wonderful art and joy you have brought into our lives.
