There are many great frontmen in the world of heavy metal, like that of Lamb Of God‘s Randy Blythe. During a recent conversation with Killswitch Engage‘s Jesse Leach and Matt Stocks (as part of the duo’s podcast Stoke the Fire), the topic of frontmen came up. While Randy speaks to the late Dave Brockie of GWAR, he also shares what he feels makes for a standout frontman.

This is what Blythe had to say (the following was transcribed by MetalSucks):

“There are guys in their closet with their YouTube rig or in their garage who can out sing either fucking one of us. There is no doubt about it, man. They have more talent, natural talent, in their little pinky than either of us. But the difference is… I think one of the main requirements to be a frontman, a good frontman — actually, the only requirement, probably; I mean, you’ve gotta have some talent — is a willingness to get up in front of people and make an idiot out of yourself and be really bad for a while until you become good.

“…. [T]hese people with all this natural talent, it doesn’t fucking matter unless you can get in front of people and do it, and you have to do it with a group of people; you have to feel that bond; you have to deliver.”

What do you make of Blythe’s points? Do you think that boldness to get up in front of people and “make an idiot of yourself” is key to such performance?

You can check out the full conversation involving Randy Blythe below. In other news involving the Lamb Of God frontman, band drummer Art Crus recently shared that he feels Blythe is the greatest frontman in metal history. You can find a link to that story below, along with all the upcoming dates that are part of Lamb Of God’s Omens tour.
