As reported by Loudwire, a video has been recently uploaded to TikTok that highlights Metallica as a “problematic fave.” This term tends to be used regarding a band/artist who people really enjoy, but there is something about them (either currently or from their past) that makes them problematic.
Per this TikTok user’s video, the individual points to Metallica as a “problematic fave” who have done their fair share of problematic stuff. At the start of the video, the user points to band guitarist and singer James Hetfield, and that of band drummer Lars Ulrich, performing a Nazi salute (via a photo). They also point to an old photo that features Hetfield alongside Kerry King of Slayer – the latter who is wearing a Confederate flag t-shirt.
The user also points to a past matter involving that of Body Count frontman Ice-T. They feature an interview with two people discussing a tour that Body Count were part of involving Metallica and Guns N Roses. The woman in this interview shares the following:
“I heard James say, about Ice-T, because Ice-T was supposed to join us on the tour, he said.. ‘I don’t want to share my stage with a, n word.'”
Per a 1992 MTV news report, which you can find below (and also appears to be referenced by the TikTok user), Axl Rose took issue with Hetfield having a problem with Body Count, even calling Hetfield a “racist.”
The user than goes on to highlight other past racist comments made by James Hetfield, as well as points throughout the band’s past where they have made fun of Kurt Cobain‘s death and Alice In Chains frontman Layne Staley’s addiction.
