It’s a bit hard to fathom, but somehow, September will mark 30 years since Alice In Chains dropped their second studio album and bona fide classic, Dirt. I mean, come on- ‘Them Bones’, ‘Rain When I Die’, ‘Down in a Hole’, ‘Would’ – there’s not a whole lot else to say about Dirt other than the obvious- the album’s a banger from start to finish, and Layne Staley is one of the best hard rock singers to ever do it, period.
Given Layne’s immense vocal talent, covering an AIC song with any sort of justice is pretty fucking hard. Which – for what it’s worth – means William DuVall deserves all of the credit in the world and then some for being able to step in to those shoes on a regular basis in the current iteration of Alice In Chains.
Back in December 2020 when live music was fully shut down due to the pandemic, Dallas Green (of City and Colour AND Alexisonfire fame) knocked it out of the ballpark with this absolutely gorgeous acoustic rendition of Alice In Chain’s ‘Rain When I Die.’
The performance was part of The Museum of Pop Culture’s live-streamed annual benefit event/fundraiser. The Museum of Pop Culture (formerly EMP Museum), is a museum focusing on music, film, science fiction, gaming and more, located in Seattle, WA below the Space Needle. The event featured a performance from Alice In Chains themselves along with a lineup of artists who did their own renditions of AIC classics.
