Along with all his artistic achievements, Twisted Sister vocalist Dee Snider once stood in front of the United States Senate’s Committee on Commerce to speak out against censorship. This was not only a bad ass move on Snider’s part, but also an important moment for the arts, with the Twisted Sister vocalist trying to look out for his fellow metal colleagues. You can find footage of Snider standing up for free speech in metal/the arts below.
To honor this important moment in heavy metal history, Dee Snider is getting his very own graphic novel! The book is titled He’s Not Gonna Take It (obviously a play on words regarding the classic Twisted Sister song, “We’re Not Gonna Take It”). The book will explore Snider’s efforts to combat censorship. The book is being released via Z2 Comics (who are also responsible for the GWAR, Spiritbox, Judas Priest, and Pantera graphic novels). Per the Z2 Comics website:
“Dee Snider and Z2 Comics have teamed up to bring you Dee Snider: HE’S NOT GONNA TAKE IT.
“The name of Dee Snider is synonymous with the battle for freedom of expression in the arts. This new graphic novel will follow the impact of it throughout Dee’s life. From a childhood where he was frequently silenced, through the early efforts to stifle his band’s music, to the open warfare of the PMRC hearings in Washington DC, and his current efforts on social media, HE’S NOT GONNA TAKE IT tells the story of why free speech is so important to this man who has fought for it. Even when it endangered everything that was important to him.”
The book comes in a variety of formats and is available to pre-order now; the graphic novel is expected to release in March of 2023. Will you be picking yourself up a copy?
