Via a recent article from Metallica’s So What!, the son of Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo, Tye Trujillo, spoke to his work on Stranger Things. While Joe Quinn is playing the hit Metallica classic “Master of Puppets” during that big scene in the show, he also received some backup support from that of Tye Trujillo (who provided additional guitar tracks).
Via the below excerpt from the So What! article, Tye talks about how he got his Stranger Things gig and the work that went into him playing the Metallica song.
“One of the producers [Randy Geiger] is married to my 3rd-grade teacher, Sona, at Muse School, and 3rd grade was when I started really getting into music,” Tye starts. “They were looking for someone to do a raw guitar track for that particular part, so Sona reached out to my current teacher, J, and asked if I’d be interested in doing that based on her knowing how interested, I was in music. They didn’t know whether I played guitar or not – they knew I played bass – but I told them I play both and that I was definitely interested in it. They sent me the script parts to learn, and I just went and practiced hard in my room.”
Tye goes on to add:
“My Dad asked Kirk [Hammett, Metallica guitarist] to help me, and Kirk sent me recordings of him playing the solo (and rhythm) down,” explains Tye. “At first, I didn’t know how I was going to learn it, but I quickly figured I’d be able to get to grips with it, and the clips were hugely helpful in that process.”
He continues:
“That’s right, Steve Ogan, the original studio guy, OG!” he laughs. “He hooked me up with all the gear because he has a bunch of sick guitars. I played through a small VOX amp for that raw sound, I used a Les Paul, and I think it was a Charvel for the solo. This all happened in late April; they wanted it tracked by May 2. I tracked it a good amount of time before the deadline just in case they needed to change anything, so it was a fast turnaround.”
What a surreal and awesome opportunity. We are super happy for you Tye! Tye also happens to be in a band called OTTO which is super bad ass and you should check them out. You can hear some of their music via the link below.
