So the Muse just recently put out a new single called “Kill Or Be Killed” and… it is surprisingly heavy (at times). Granted, we aren’t talking Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, or Slipknot heavy, but the song features some strong metal elements throughout it. Per a statement provided by band frontman Matt Bellamy (via Facebook):

“’Kill Or Be Killed’ is Muse at their heaviest! We wanted to update our hard rock sound on this album and with ‘Kill Or Be Killed’ we found a modern metal sound featuring double bass drum action and even a death growl. Lyrically the song takes influence from my favourite Paul McCartney song ‘Live And Let Die’, a dark take on how life’s adversity can sometimes bring out the worst human instincts to survival at any costs.”

So what exactly does Bellamy mean when he says “modern metal sound”? Well as you will hear in the song (video below), the guitar work offers a strong industrial tone at times, alongside some extra heavy drumming. While Bellamy does a lot of singing throughout the track, that death metal growl of his sounds pretty sick!

What are your thoughts on this new Muse song “Kill Or Be Killed”? Do you think it is pretty metal (or at least pretty metal compared to the Muse’s past material)?

The band has caught us by surprise before when it comes to metal; back in June, during one of their live shows, the band performed a brief instrumental cover of a classic Slipknot song. To learn more about that moment, follow the link below. And speaking of Slipknot, back in 2001, Muse drummer Dominic Howard got a hold of band frontman Corey Taylor‘s mask and ended up mocking him. There is video footage of this if you want to check it out (link to that story can be found below).
