Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant was offered the chance to make an appearance on the HBO show Game Of Thrones, but declined the opportunity. That sounds odd as hell to us – who wouldn’t want to be on such an epic show?! Hell, Mastodon even had a cameo!

As reported by Classic Rock, during a “live before an audience” interview with broadcaster George Stroumboulopoulos, Robert Plant was asked if he had ever seen the HBO show; Plant replies with a no, but then follows up with, “I got offered a part in that.”

Stroumboulopoulos then clarifies with Plant, asking, “And you said, No?”

Robert Plant replies with,

“Yeah, well, I don’t want to be typecast. I mean, I started that shit!

“Go back to Immigrant Song and Led Zeppelin being part of a cultural exchange in Iceland with the Icelandic government. So they didn’t really know what they’d invited onto their little island.”

For context, the Led Zeppelin song “Immigrant Song” involves references to Norse mythology; so when the singer says “I started that shit!,” he is playfully referring to exploring the fantasy genre well before author George R.R. Martin wrote the Game Of Thrones books (or the show came to HBO).

During that same conversation, Plant talks about the inspiration behind the band’s song, sharing the following:

“So on the way back on the plane, I started thinking about… because I love Western European history from maybe the Bronze Age up through all the old religion… when we were really in touch with our earth. And so the Viking thing was obviously that whole idea of playing in Iceland and experiencing this amazing landscape and people.

“Yeah, I’ve got a lot to answer for, really, because I’ve never seen so many bands with double-bladed axes. [If it wasn’t for Immigrant Song] they could have all looked like Soft Cell.”

Do you think Robert Plant should have taken the cameo opportunity regardless? What are your thoughts on Game Of Thrones? Are you looking forward to the new spin-off coming to HBO?
