America’s Got Talent is really drawing in metal artists lately, for the show just recently featured a death metal choir (who covered a Britney Spears song for their performance). The death metal choir are known as the Dremeka Choir (based out of Canada). While appearing on America’s Got Talent, the choir decided to perform a death metal cover of the Britney Spears song “Toxic” – and folks… it is so fucking awesome.
Prior to performing the cover, the conductor of Dremeka Choir introduces the group; when he is asked what does “Dremeka” mean, the conductor shares, “Dremeka is a very ancient word that means dream machine, and we are here to make you dream.”
Prior to the choir’s performance, one may have a couple assumptions regarding the kind of music associated with choirs; given that choirs tend to be popular in some religious settings, it wouldn’t be too much of a jump to assume that a choir group may perform something of the gospel variety. But for Dremeka Choir, it is all about death metal.
As you will see in the video below, as the Dremeka Choir start up with a flashy light show and guttural vocal presentation, the audience and judges are taken aback by their performance. However, there is a really adorable moment where the band start growling the words “Toxic toxic,” and everyone picks up on the song they are covering. You have to check out this performance for yourself – it is truly incredible.
