We are getting a sequel to the 1984 rock mockumentary movie This Is Spinal Tap.
The movie focused on that of a fictional British heavy metal band called Spinal Tap. Per the film’s Wikipedia page, upon the movie’s debut, it saw critical success, but did not do too well commercially; that said, when the movie was released on VHS, that is when it began to click with viewers (even eventually gaining a large cult following). Now given its success, the movie is getting a sequel!
As reported by Variety, via Deadline, the sequel will be directed by Rob Reiner, who directed the first Spinal Tap movie, and will feature returning stars Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer.
The This Is Spinal Tap sequel will apparently be presented in the style of Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz; The Last Waltz is a concert documentary that followed Canadian American rock act The Band.
Apparently, some big name musicians will also be part of this movie; at the time of this writing though, there is no confirmation as to who will appear in the sequel.
The film will be released on March, 19th 2024 (which is ironic, since 2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the film). Will you be checking out the movie?
Earlier this month, news came out that actor Ric Parnell, who played the fictional drummer Mick Shrimpton in the first movie, had passed away. He was 70 years old.
Per Parnell’s Wikipedia page:
“Parnell’s big break came in 1984 when he played the role of Mick Shrimpton in the mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. His character was one of a long line of unfortunate drummers who all perish from freak accidents, his own fate being spontaneous combustion.”
