At a show that took place last week, Metallica singer and guitarist James Hetfield spoke to the crowd about some insecurities he was struggling with – he spoke of some inner self-talk involving his age and questioning his ability to play. He told the crowd how he brought this up to the band, and how in return, they showed him compassion and understanding.
Per Metallica singer James Hetfield, this is what he had to say:
“I’ve gotta tell you I wasn’t feeling very good before I came out here. [Earlier I was] feeling a little bit insecure, like I’m an old guy, can’t play anymore — all this bullshit that I tell myself in my head. So I talked to these guys, and they helped me — as simple as that. They gave me a hug and said, ‘Hey, if you’re struggling on stage, we’ve got your back.’ And I tell you, it means the world to me.”
Upon saying those words, the band then came together, all embracing James. It is an incredibly beautiful and heartfelt moment. Once the embrace is over, the Metallica singer returns to the microphone and says the following to the audience.
“And seeing you out there, I… I am not alone. I am not alone, and neither are you.”
What a beautiful feeling to know that you have people in your life who are there for you, to love and support you in difficult times. We are glad James has that with the band and that they all care for one another.
