Sometime in the early 2000s, System Of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian met rapper Kanye West at a show and West expressed his enjoyment of the band.
In a new interview with Rock Feed, the System Of a Down bassist talked about meeting the rapper in the early stages of his career. You can find what Odadjian had to say about meeting the rapper below.

“A long time ago bro, we were playing in Germany, and then I see this group of guys – these hip-hop style guys getting off on System. And that was big to me, I was like ‘Fuck yeah we’re crossing fucking genres here.’ They came backstage and there was fucking Kanye… I didn’t know who they were at the time. Swear.
“I was like, ‘Fuck nice to meet you guys.’
“[Kanye and the group said] ‘Yeah you guys are bad ass and this and that.’ And it was Kanye, [and he said], ‘I’m Kanye.’
“And I’m like, ‘Okay nice to meet you, I don’t know who you are, but that’s cool.’ It was a while ago, before he became famous.”
The interviewer then asks what year this moment took place, to which Odadjian says, “Sometime in the 2000s.” The interviewer then makes a comment about how Kanye would have been producing; prior to making it as a big rapper, West was predominantly known for his producing work.
Odadjian continues:
“He was producing and I think he dropped his first record. So, the way I knew it was him [is because] I had heard about the jaw-wiring and the accident he had. So I said ‘Are you…’ and he said yeah that’s me, and I said, “Fuck okay I know who you are!”

The accident Odadjian is referring too is a car accident Kanye West was in that required the rapper to get jaw surgery. West would release his debut studio album The College Dropout in 2004.
