Magic The Gathering is a popular game among many metalheads, and in honor of the game’s latest expansion, Trivium vocalist/guitarist Matt Heafy has taken part in streaming a special song to celebrate the set’s release. Heafy joins keyboard player Jonathan Young in performing and streaming the song “Tasukete” off of the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty soundtrack. Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty is the latest expansion in the Magic The Gathering card game, weaving together themes of ninjas, samurais, and cyberpunk technology.
News of this song and video comes from Heafy’s Twitter. Compared to his work in Trivium, “Tasukete” has more of an electronica-rock vibe to it, Young’s keywork providing a riveting rhythm alongside Heafy’s guitar playing and hypnotic vocals. You can catch the video of Heafy and Young’s stream below:
Honestly, that is a super catchy song! It also isn’t the first time that Heafy has lent is talents to the world of gaming. Back in 2010, Trivium contributed to the God of War soundtrack, God of War: Blood & Metal, their song “Shattering the Skies Above” being an absolutely rip-roaring thrasher. In 2021, the band collaborated with Bethesda Game Studios on their title The Elder Scrolls Online, creating theme music for the game.
Magic The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast, has been around since 1993 and has become one of the most popular trading card games in history. As a game based very much in high-fantasy, Magic includes an abundance of heavy metal spirit; one of last year’s sets, titled Kaldheim, was heavy metal and Norse mythology themed – the ideal expansion set for metalheads to dive into. The game is also available to play online via MTG Arena and Magic: The Gathering Online.
Heafy and Young’s work on “Tasukete” is incredible, making for a cut that is exhilaratingly fun and mesmerizing. If you are not familiar with Magic The Gathering, you can learn more about the game and Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty here.
