Along with listening to some awesome tunes, the weekend is a great time to stream movies – especially action movies. “But The Pit,” you ask, “There are so many movies to choose from, where will I ever start?!” Well friend, you don’t have to worry, because if you’re looking for flicks that offer high-octane adrenaline, we got you covered. Flipping through the likes of Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime, we’ve created a list of some killer action movies we think will bring an extra kick to your weekend. Here are some excellent action movies to stream across these services:
(steaming on Netflix)
Batman may be the most metal comic book character ever (okay, maybe tied with that of Spawn). But if you’ve been itching to revisit one of the older Batman movies, Batman: The Dark Knight is available on Netflix now. We imagine you Batman fans are excited for Matt Reeves’ The Batman coming out this March, so what better way to get hyped up than by watching this remarkable film.
(steaming on Netflix)
Or maybe you need something a little bloodier? While Zack Snyder may be more well-known at the moment for his work on Justice League, the director has also released a string of excellent action movies. Though there are the likes of Sucker Punch and Watchmen, we want to shout out 300. This is a movie that gets the blood pumping, that makes you want to lift weights and scream randomly in the streets. It is pure action watching the legendary 300 Spartans battle a massive army, outthinking them through brilliant militaristic tactics.
(steaming on Hulu)
We have a feeling that Dredd may have slipped under a few people’s radar and that’s a damn shame. Based off the comic book Judge Dredd, the titular bad ass shows no mercy in the face of injustice; he won’t think twice if someone has committed wrong, pulling the trigger to unleash a barrage of sci-fi bullet storm mayhem. Dredd is one of the most underrated action movies ever and is totally worth your time checking out. (Side fun note for you metalheads, the character/comic Judge Dredd is the basis for Antrhax’s hit song “I Am the Law”).
(steaming on Hulu)
While we would like to recommend The Raid to you first – funny enough – the first entry is not available for streaming. That said, you don’t need to know a ton from the first movie to get on board for the second; what you do need to prepare for is how utterly violent and gory The Raid 2 is. This Indonesian action flick is top-tier action, offering an incredible array of hand-to-hand combat and explosive brutality.
(steaming on HBO Max)
For you gamers out there, 2005’s Doom is an awesome gem worth watching. Does it lean into cheesy sci-fi action? You bet your ass it does, and it’s all the better for it. Pulling a great deal of inspiration from the game Doom 3, the movie adaptation features the likes of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Karl Urban, and Rosamund Pike.
(steaming on HBO Max)
If you love your big monster movies like we do, then last year’s Godzilla vs. Kong is a terrific movie worth re-watching (or if you haven’t seen it yet, we highly recommend it). The two iconic Kaiju go head-to-head in the most epic of brawls, destroying everything in their path. With the nuclear titan Godzilla causing mayhem, humankind relies on Kong to help save them. Godzilla vs. Kong is easily one of 2021’s biggest action highlights.
Predator (1987)
(steaming on Prime)
This classic turns 35 this year and is one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first big roles. If you don’t happen to know the story: A team of commandos is sent into the jungle on an important mission, only to discover a threat that is out of this world. Predator is a classic when it comes to horror-action movies. While there are several Predator movies today, with a new one coming out later this year, nothing beats the original.
(steaming on Prime)
This south Korean action-horror flick will have you on the edge of your seat. Let us paint a picture for you:
You’re on a train with a loved one, heading off for the day to do whatever. The train is in motion, and suddenly, there is a zombie infestation on board. What the hell are you going to do?
Train to Busan is a wildly admired movie, providing compelling drama, action, and gore. Hell, it has made such an impact in niche-horror circles that we’re getting an American remake sometime in the future.
We love action movies just as much as any other metalhead. There’s nothing like some glorious visual action to get the blood flowing and into a head banging mood. Hopefully these films bring a much-welcomed jolt of excitement to your weekend!
