More and more, mainstream celebrities are showing their love for metal. Whether it’s North West repping Black Sabbath, Demi Lovato promoting metalcore and black metal, or Nicolas Cage supporting his black metal-playing son, big names in pop culture have started repping metal in one way or another. Now, another celebrity has sported a metal T-shirt publicly — though his love of metal might not be very surprising to some people.
As reported by MetalSucks, rapper Lil Nas X, famous for his song “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” and the video for it in which he twerks on Satan’s lap before killing him and assuming the throne of Hell, can be seen wearing the T-shirt of death metal act Hatemonger. For those of you unaware of their work, Hatemonger are a Chicago-based grind act who dropped their debut EP, The Vile Maxim, this year. Lil Nas X wore their shirt during a promotional interview for his appearance at the Audacy Beach Festival.

Now look, you could argue that Lil Nas X is just trying to cause more controversy by wearing this Hatemonger shirt, and that he doesn’t actually like the band, and that he’s yet another celebrity using metal merch for its cred and not to promote their love of the music. But a) the dudes in Hatemonger are probably okay with it, and b) it ain’t hurting no one, so who cares?
Meanwhile, this isn’t Lil Nas X’s first display of a love of metal. Back in April, when two Tiktokers created a metal cover of “Montero,” the rapper himself publicly supported it, So just know that even if the dude doesn’t own Hatemonger’s EP on vinyl, he’s still pretty down with metal and darkness in general.
Here’s the “Montero” video:
