DC Comics have been going hard in the metal paint of lately with their new series ‘Dark Knights: Death Metal,’ in which a dark goddess is destroying all of the universes adjacent to our own and unleashing dark new versions of our favorite heroes upon the earth (…or something). Now, the comics company have revealed the tracklisting to the Tyler Bates-produced soundtrack to this event, and have released the first song — a ripping new number by Mastodon!
What’s immediately audible on Mastodon’s new track “Forged by Neron” is how well it straddles the band’s earlier metal output and their newer, groovier hard rock material. The song isn’t gore metal, obviously, but it has a punch to it that some of the stuff on later albums like The Hunter and Once More ‘Round The Sun played with but never fully embraced. It’s an understandable shift — if you’re given an epic comic book storyline full of ancient gods and sinister superheroes to work from, you’ll undoubtedly want the song you write to be pretty fucking metal.
“We are super excited and honored to be part of the ‘Dark Nights: Death Metal Soundtrack!'” says Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor. “We’ve all been fans of DC Comics and the Batman universe since we were kids, so it really means a lot for us to be able to add something to that world.”
