You gotta give it to Carnifex — they’ve hung around, and done so with gusto. While so many other bands who grew during the deathcore explosion have fallen by the wayside or become modern-day new-wavers, the San Diego Band has remained active and heavy as the dickens (and never really went full deathcore, choosing instead a kinetic-yet-true death metal style). Case in point, Carnifex have just dropped a new single titled “Seven Souls,” and man is it satisfying.
What’s most exciting about “Seven Souls” is how big it is. It’d be very easy for Carnifex just to pummel the listener with one jud after another, but instead the band manages to make the song sound looming and sweeping. As such, there’s almost a hint of gothic black metal here, those key-driven accents adding a cathedral height to the track. Fans of death metal acts like Inferi or Fleshgod Apocalypse will find something really compelling about that level of drama.
