Gojira Release Laid-Back New Single “The Chant”

Even at their most spiritual and thoughtful, French groove metallers Gojira have always brought a level of furious heaviness to the table. But with the band’s upcoming new record Fortitude, one thing Gojira are experimenting with is listenability. Now, the band have dropped their latest single “The Chant,” and it’s probably their most chill track to date.

What fans will immediately notice on “The Chant” is the rhythm and guitar tone — the former is laid-back and bouncing, while the latter has a jangle to it that’s very different from the band’s usual churn. The vocals, meanwhile, are almost entirely clean-sung, a far cry from Joe Duplantier’s typical urgent bellows. The song will undoubtedly be divisive for the band, bringing less metal-oriented listeners into the fold while bothering those who come to the band for the thousand-ton crush.
