Weed: an Earth-born medicine that drives inspiration and protects your soul against the real world, or another mind-numbing drug that makes your jokes dumb, your outfits ridiculous, and your waistline a goddamn travesty? Without weed, Black Sabbath may never have perfected the downer guitar tone from which all heavy metal stems — but maybe they would’ve written something faster and harder. Thus, the timeless question once more arises: is marijuana good for humanity, or is there a reason they call it ‘dope?’
On a very special 4/20 episode of our heavy metal talk show Last Words, hosts Katy Irizarry (Season Of Mist), Doc Coyle (Bad Wolves/Ex Man Podcast), and Zeena Koda (Everything’s Political Podcast) talk all things green and uplifting with none other than Brendon Small, creator of every metalhead’s favorite cartoon show Metalocalypse and guitarist/vocalist/songwriter for fictional metal overlords Dethklok. And given how many potheads Brendon has made guffaw, it’s unsurprising that he knows a thing or two about the sonic kale.
“Whether or not the performers are high, the audience definitely is,” laughs Brendon, adding, “When you start stuff at midnight, it’s a different point of view. And I think Adult Swim really understood late-night comedy. They invented a style of comedy. I remember seeing Space Ghost and thinking, My God, this is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. This is a new style of comedy that I have not seen. It’s like creating a new style of music, a new genre. How often do we get a new genre that just pops out of nowhere? Adult Swim definitely did that.”
