At the end of the day, there will never be a point when digital instruments entirely eclipse analog ones. Sure a million thinkpieces will be written about whether or not the guitar is dead, but the truth is that kids will always be inspired to pick up an instrument and throw their entire body into playing it. That said, digital alternatives can at least provide us insane moments where music fans show us the sonic equivalent of fingerboarding — like this dude playing drums along with Cannibal Corpse on his iPad.
The musician in question is Russian online personality Артём Барабанович, who goes by the Instagram handle of, wait for it, mripaddrummer. Mr. Drummer has made an entire account in which he performs iPad drums alongside famous rock and metal songs, including tracks by Iron Maiden, Chelsea Grin, Evanescence, Hatebreed, and Suicide Silence. But it’s his performance of Cannibal Corpse’s classic single “Hammer Smashed Face,” made famous by its appearance in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, that has really captured the hearts and minds of metal fans around the world.

While this guy’s fingers may be fast, the real question is: can he design an album cover concept that will get banned in Germany and make normal people around the globe throw up? Because if not, he has nothing on Paul Mazurkiewicz, Cannibal Corpse’s actual drummer and one of the guys behind their infamous repulsive record sleeves, including their upcoming record Violence Unimagined.
“This time around, I myself thought, and I think the other guys as well, that it was time to get really, really brutal here,” Paul told us while ranking the band’s album covers by how disgusting they are. “Especially with a title like Violence Unimagined — with a title like that, it’s gotta be something pretty shocking. That was important.”
