It seems like 2020 is finally the year that rock and metal fans take arms against the winter’s most unholy denizen: Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” For many, this song heralds the coming of cheer and presents; for us, it’s a sign that we’re about to hear this goddamn tune twenty times an hour until New Years’ Day. First, a YouTuber mashed the song up with Metallica’s “For Whom The Bell Tolls” to hopefully make it easier to swallow; now, Nashville hard rock act Voltagehawk have decided to make the track slightly more palatable by covering it in their distinctly chuggy style — and have created a video full of Yuletide carnage to promote it.

As you’ll hear, Voltagehawk’s version of the Mariah Carey classic never quite goes full metal, but it does have a lot of big-boned riffs to dilute some of the original’s saccharine tone. There are fewer jingle bells, more power chords. And then there’s the video, in which Krampus (or Christmas Satan, though they’re honestly the same thing) decides that the members of Voltagehawk must die for their Yuletide sins, and uses their parts to create a crime against God and nature (that, one assumes, he later bangs).

According to Louder, the band describe the footage as “dripping with equal parts sex and carnage, creating the ultimate Christmas song experience for rock and rollers who love tasty licks and heavy riffs and gore.”

“We all know this song sucks,” say the guys in Voltagehawk, “so we made a version that doesn’t.”

What do you think — does Voltagehawk’s cover of this Mariah Carey classic wipe the taste of peppermint and sequins out of your mouth? Do you wish they’d gone full blastbeat, or are you glad that precious minutes and riffs aren’t wasted trying to make this song palatable for metalheads?
