If you’re a regular reader of The Pit, you might not love “Say So,” the massive pop hit by Doja Cat. The video for the track has about 237m views on YouTube, though one assumes that very few of them are from Slayer fans — at least, until today. At last night’s MTV Europe Music Awards, Doja Cat performed “Say So” live, and gave the song a metal makeover that surely had some pop fans wincing and plenty of metalheads nodding in brutal approval.

As you’ll see in the video below, Doja Cat’s stage set-up was filled with flowers, projecting beauty and nature — until Doja crawled out of a screen like Sadako from The Ring. After that, the LA pop star performed her hit track backed up by a Slipknot-ish metal band, who went so far as to provide some double-bass drum rolls behind the song, all while a blood moon hung over the stage. Doja even windmilled her hair — she’s no Corpsegrinder, but we all had to start somewhere — while a female guitarist wailed in the background. As far as ways to shake up a pop song go, this one’s incredibly entertaining.

Doja Cat also walked away from the EMAs with the Best New Artist award, so congrats to her, and big props for doing something cooler and more adventurous than most pop stars would be willing to do.

Also appearing at this year’s EMAs were Jack Harlow, Alicia Keys, Tate McRae, DaBaby, Karol G, David Guetta, Sam Smith, Maluma, Doja Cat, YUNGBLUD, Zara Larsson, Little Mix, Madison Beer, Why Don’t We, and 24kGoldn — though unfortunately it appears that none of them had facepainted metallers playing bitching solos behind them.

Meanwhile, if this doesn’t seem like a big enough departure, here’s Doja Cat’s “Say So” video, so you can compare and contrast it to her EMAs performance:
