Netflix’s music documentary series Song Exploder, the TV version of the podcast hosted by Hrishikesh Hirway in which artists pick apart how they made specific songs, has announced a new batch of episodes, including an episode on Nine Inch Nails’ 1994 ballad “Hurt,” from The Downward Spiral. The new set of episodes premieres on December 15. Nine Inch Nails first appeared on the Song Exploder podcast back in 2017 for an episode on “The Lovers,” from the group’s Add Violence EP. In a press release, Hirway explained that Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor helped to plant the seed for the idea to transform Song Exploder into a TV show.
“I first interviewed Trent Reznor for a Nine Inch Nails episode of the podcast back in 2017, and afterwards, as I was packing up my microphone and laptop, he asked me, ‘Have you ever thought about making this into a TV show?’” Hirway says. “It was just a glimmer of an idea back then. I’m so excited that it’s come to life, and I get to share four more episodes of the series with these beloved artists. They’re all so different from one another in terms of sound and background, and I can’t wait for people to see and hear their stories, and the unique path they each took to create these songs.”
The new season of Song Exploder also features episodes on The Killers, Dua Lipa and Natalia Lafourcade. The Netflix series premiered on October 2, featuring episodes on R.E.M., Lin Manuel Miranda, Alicia Keys and Ty Dolla $ign. The podcast is now up to 194 episodes, which includes guests such as Slipknot, Metallica, Oathbreaker, Dropkick Murphys, Iggy Pop, HEALTH, Converge, and legendary horror director John Carpenter.
