It can be easy to forget that Ghostbusters was actually arcane as fuck. Sure, it involved Bill Murray cracking wise about being getting and Sigourney Weaver sucking face with Rick Moranis, but it was also about a Lovecraftian god raising the dead throughout New York City and turning people into demon hounds in order to bring about the end of the world. That shit is cult, no matter how much coke Harold Ramis was doing. Now, a death metal band has decided to run with that idea, having written a gnarly record about the horrors of Ghostbusters — and it might be one of the albums of the year.

The band call themselves Supernatural Elimination, based on the moment during the Ghostbusters’ commercial where Dan Aykroyd says, “Our courteous and efficient staff is on call 24 hours a day to serve all your supernatural elimination needs.” The music is a mixture of melodic gore metal a la Impaled and LIK, along with ripping grindcore in the vein of Exhumed and Cadaveric Incubator. And while titles like “Trial By Slime,” “Scourge of Carpathia,” and “Choose Your Destructor” sound as evil as any black metal band’s monikers, they’re all directly to the 1984 classic and its questionable 1989 sequel (though that song is a solid reminder that Ghostbusters II‘s Vigo the Carpathian was an awesome Vlad The Impaler stand-in).

Check out Supernatural Elimination’s self-titled EP below. And before you ask, no, they don’t cover Ray Parker Jr.’s theme song, but closing track “Who The FUCK Are You Going To Call?” is as powerful a ‘busting anthem (heh…) as any.

Supernatural Elimination’s debut album can be purchased from their Bandcamp. Just a heads up that if you play the record backwards, and a lightning-fingered ’80s back-up dancer covered in cotton candy shows up and asks you if you’re a god, you say YES, God damn it.
