This weekend saw Linkin Park‘s debut album Hybrid Theory turn twenty years old. Besides acting as a firm reminder that many of us are now older than God, the anniversary acts as a powerful milestone for one of rock’s most influential bands, for whom that record — and its huge first single “One Step Closer” — vaulted them into superstardom. Now, to honor the album’s legacy, the band have released previously-unseen footage from the shoot of the “One Step Closer” video.
As you’ll see in the footage, the most interesting thing about this view behind the scenes of “One Step Closer” is how young and hungry the band are. This isn’t the Linkin Park of latter years, who know how the press cycle goes and are aware that anything they say can and will be used against them in the court of public opinion. Instead, you’ve got an incredibly fresh-faced band — look at ’em! Lil Chester! Lil Shinoda! — talking about their hopes and dreams, and how they even got here.
“When we were looking for a vocalist, we sent Chester an instrumental tape and asked him to sing to that and get it back to us,” recalls Mike. “He skipped his 23rd birthday party — left! — and records the stuff in the studio, and calls us up the same night we sent it to him, and says, ‘Okay, it’s done.’ And we’re like, ‘…well, can we hear it? Can you play it for us?’ He plays it over the phone, and we were like, ‘Okay, just get on a plane tomorrow. Just come on out.'”
