Most of the time, the description of ‘heavy metal movie’ means you’re going to see a lot of blood and boobs in a film, like Deathgasm. And that’s totally fine — we love a good horror comedy as much as anyone else. But those movies rarely take metal and metalheads seriously, and for the people living this life, it’s not all nachos and zombies. Now, Amazon has just revealed the first trailer for Sound of Metal, a film about a metal drummer coping with the loss of his hearing, and it looks like the serious metal movie we’ve all been waiting for.

According to the film’s Amazon Prime synopsis, “During a series of adrenaline-fueled one-night gigs, itinerant punk-metal drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) begins to experience intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career — and with it his life — is over. His bandmate and girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) checks the recovering heroin addict into a secluded sober house for the deaf in hopes it will prevent a relapse and help him learn to adapt to his new situation. But after being welcomed into a community that accepts him just as he is, Ruben has to choose between his equilibrium and the drive to reclaim the life he once knew.”

The movie has taken a number of film festivals by storm, and understandably so. For metalheads, this story — especially with the recent hearing loss issues suffered by stars like AC/DC’s Brian Johnson — is powerful and important. Being unable to play or listen to music anymore is hell to a metal fan, and this movie seems to confront what that must be like.

Sound of Metal will be released on December 4th via Amazon.
